SFMHS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and presentation of the rich historical heritage of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

SFMHS has more than 3,000 members and fulfills its mission through a broad spectrum of exhibitions, programs, and special events. The Society produces two publications - The Argonaut, a beautiful journal featuring photographs and in-depth reviews of our city's history, and Panorama, a quarterly newsletter for members that features upcoming programs and events including those of other Bay Area historical groups.

SFMHS is leading the Mint Project to restore the Old Mint Building as 5th and Mission streets. This National Historic Landmark will be transformed into an exciting new center where visitors can experience San Francisco by learning more about the stories of the men and women who made San Francisco what it is today.
